I’ve been working on my album since last year and to be honest, it has not been an easy journey. One night we had a songwriting session with my producers and we were writing a song called One Name. In the process, God dropped another song melody in my spirit and in the moment I asked the guys to play the melody. I gave it to them note by note and from there God gave me the chorus. There were goosebumps in the room because it was a God-moment. We all felt the presence of God in the studio! It was so evident, I found myself in tears thinking about all the tough seasons I’ve been through that led to this moment. I’ve always wanted to share my seasons through my music but it is so difficult to write a song that really articulates some of the pain and prayers I’ve prayed for the past three years.
Holy Spirit comes from a season of pain and when all seemed to be going wrong. It was a prayer. A prayer for God to break down walls in my life and my family that seemed to hold us back from what God intended for us. It wasn’t easy praying and believing for the miracle and intervention, but God is a God of His promises, He came through and broke the walls down.
The song was also inspired by the story in the Bible in Joshua 6:1-27 when the Lord caused the walls of Jericho to collapse, giving victory to Joshua and his men. The Bible actually states in verse 1 that the gates of Jericho were securely barred, and no one went out and no one went in. Joshua must of felt like its impossible to have victory over the city, given the gates and walls built around it. I could relate too, with walls in my life that represented pain, feelings of hopelessness, sickness and a wall between me and God, as I felt like my prayers weren’t being answered.
It’s in moments of ‘being stuck between a rock and a hard place’ that I have come to know the power of praise and worship. Declaring and acknowledging God to be greater and above the circumstance. The Israelites in the story are told to keep quiet and just march around the wall for 6 days, and on the seventh day to blow trumpets and have the whole army give a loud shout. The wall collapsed and they took the city. I too have learnt to give God praise and shout His name louder in the face of walls that try to hold me back from claiming my victories. The bridge of the song says “You’ve given us the victory, On fallen walls we stand, Jesus you are the reason, Our lives are forever changed”. Jesus is the reason we have victory over every and any wall of depression, sickness, failure or shame. He breaks down our walls and makes us free.
Besides the song itself being titled Holy Spirit, I love the Holy Spirit too. He speaks to us and guides us, helps us navigate through this thing called life, and not only navigate but have victory too. The Holy Spirit gives us strength to persevere during trying times. Jesus says in John 14:26 -But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor- Counsellor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my Name (in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf), He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything I have told you” (AMP). We have the Holy Sprit with us 24/7 to help us be conquerors in the face of impossible situations.
I wrote the song with my best friend Tondi Rams. This is what he had to say about the song: “Psalm 66:1-5 This is a Psalm of celebration; a celebration of God’s goodness and the victory He gives his children. When I think about the song ‘Holy Spirit’ what comes to mind is that there’s nothing that can stand before our God, not even the biggest things we feel are a great challenge to us. When walls, that have held us back from God’s best for us, have fallen, our expression becomes that of praise; we shout triumphantly proclaiming God’s goodness! As we see in this Psalm, we simply can’t contain the freedom that God has won for us. We shout for joy because He has freed us, no more walls holding us back; be it discouragement, sickness, depression, heartbreak, rejection, sin, low self-esteem, feeling unworthy, whatever it may be. God is so powerful that nothing can withstand His power, that’s why we can cast our burdens on Him and trust that He can free us. This is why we can, “Shout for Joy to God, all the earth!”
I hope and pray this song will inspire you to know you are already a victor regardless of the walls you come across in this life time.
